Study Reveals Chiropractic Spinal Manipulation May Reduce Gabapentin Prescriptions For Low Back Pain
A new study from University Hospitals (UH) Connor Whole Health has highlighted a potential benefit of chiropractic care in managing radicular low back pain, commonly known as sciatica. Published in BMJ Open, the research titled “Association between chiropractic spinal manipulation and gabapentin prescription in adults with radicular low back pain: retrospective cohort study using U.S. data” examines how chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy (CSMT) affects the likelihood of receiving gabapentin prescriptions. Many of our AmeriWell Clinics patients come to us seeking non-medication relief of back pain and limited range of motion. Our Laurel, MD, chiropractors are excited to share the news from this study with our patients and treatment team, as it dovetails with our practice mission: pain relief without invasive procedures or prescriptions.
The study focused on adults under 50 with newly diagnosed radicular low back pain and aimed to determine if those receiving CSMT had reduced odds of being prescribed gabapentin, an off-label medication for managing this type of pain. Using data from a large U.S. healthcare network, researchers found that patients receiving CSMT had significantly lower odds of being prescribed gabapentin compared to those who received standard medical care. Specifically, the odds ratio was 0.53 (p<0.0001), indicating a notable reduction in gabapentin use among chiropractic patients.
Lead author Dr. Robert J. Trager from UH Connor Whole Health expressed enthusiasm about the findings, stating, “Our results suggest that chiropractic care could effectively manage low back pain and align more closely with clinical practice guidelines regarding medication use. This study reaffirms the benefits of chiropractic spinal manipulation and highlights its potential to reduce reliance on medications like gabapentin.”
The study builds on previous research showing that chiropractic care can also reduce prescriptions for other medications, such as benzodiazepines and opioids. As healthcare continues to evolve, such studies contribute valuable insights into how non-surgical interventions can enhance pain management and improve patient outcomes.
Looking For Non-Medication Solutions For Lower Back Pain?
If you’re seeking relief from lower back pain without relying on medication, chiropractic treatment could be an effective option. Chiropractors specialize in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal disorders, particularly those affecting the spine. One of the primary techniques used is spinal manipulation, which aims to restore proper alignment and function to the spine.
Spinal manipulation involves applying controlled force to specific areas of the spine to correct misalignments, reduce nerve irritation, and improve overall mobility. This approach not only targets pain relief but also addresses the underlying issues contributing to discomfort. By realigning the spine, chiropractors can help alleviate pressure on nerves and surrounding tissues, potentially reducing pain and enhancing your range of motion.
Chiropractic care is designed to offer a holistic approach to pain management, focusing on the root causes of back pain rather than just masking symptoms. For many patients, this approach provides significant relief and improves overall spinal health without the need for pharmaceutical interventions. If you’re interested in exploring non-medication solutions for lower back pain, consulting with a chiropractor could be a beneficial first step.
